The Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence will be hosting a free poetry workshop for their annual Saipan Teen Poetry Slam tomorrow, Jan. 14, at the Hyatt Regency Saipan.

The free workshop on poetry writing and public speaking will be from 8:30am to 11:30am and is open to youth ages 13 to 19 who have received permission from a parent/guardian and their school (if applicable) to attend. Seating is limited to the first 20 to sign up with permission. The workshop is not mandatory for those who wish to compete.

The annual Saipan Teen Poetry Slam itself will be held on Feb. 28 as part of Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month. The competition is open to ages 13 to 19. Participants will compete and perform original poetry about teen dating violence and/or healthy relationships. The poems and performances will be judged on quality of writing, entertainment value of the poem, connection to the audience, and relevance to Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month.

Poems should not have real names or profanity, and performances should not be longer than 5 minutes. The competition will have two divisions: For those 13 years old to 15 years old and those who are 16 years old to 19 years old.

Each competitor will be performing one poem and contestants should present their own poem as originally submitted, with no changes or additions to the written content.

Those who are interested in competing should submit their poems and contact information to info@endviolencenmi.org on or before 11:59pm on Feb. 19, 2020.

For more information contact the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence at (670) 234-3878.
