Sonia Siwa of PDM Promoters Inc., the non-profit group that handles the Saipan Awaodori Team, said yesterday that the group has already begun rehearsals for the festival, which is slated for April 19 at the Paseo de Marianas in Garapan.

The team holds its practice at the Koblerville Youth Learning Center on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. About 10 new members are joining the 40-member team in this year’s festival.

As members of the Saipan Awaodori Team, Siwa said the young dancers are encouraged to take part in community outreach activities, including the monthly cleanup of PDM Promoters in the Garapan area.

Last Saturday, PDM Promoters did its cleanup for the month of February. About 40 volunteers, including some 30 Saipan Awaodori Team members, parents, and guardians, took part in the cleanup from 9am to 111am.

The cleanup covered Coral Tree Avenue to the Garapan fire station along Beach Road up to DFS Galleria. Siwa noted, though, that their cleanup was focused on removing debris left behind by those that trimmed the shrubs on the road’s center islands.

“We had to sweep those leaves so that they won’t be flown by the wind, which could actually cause nuisance to motorists or passersby,” Siwa explained.

The group collected 1,300 lbs of trash from the cleanup.

Siwa expressed her appreciation to the Division of Environmental Quality and D&Q for providing them with trash supplies and refreshments.
