Saipan pump prices down another 10 cents
The pump prices of gas stations on Saipan dropped another 10 cents last Thursday, a week after it went down 15 cents to break the psychological $4-per-gallon barrier.
Mobil Oil Marianas gas stations rolled back the price of its regular gas to $3.81 from $3.91 per gallon, while its super unleaded is now $4.13 a gallon from $4.23. Diesel also retails 10 cents lower at Mobil at $4.27 per gallon.
Shell Marians mirrored the slash in Mobil’s prices with V-Power now selling at $3.81 per gallon and diesel at $4.27 per gallon.
Despite the reduction of gas prices on Saipan, gas stations on Tinian continue to sell their regular gasoline at $5.22 per gallon, while diesel is at $5.80. Saipan Tribune wasn’t able to verify the price of gas on Rota.
Joy Minor, a mother of two, said the continuing trend of decreasing gas prices is a boon to her family of four.
She said her family used to spend $55 a week on gas but because of the rollbacks the past couple of months they now spend only $40 a week. Minor said she would use the savings on food expenses.
She added that previously they didn’t even have to fork over money for gas as her husband, Boyet, used to get gas allowance from his company. That changed, however, when Boyet was assigned to Guam.
“When he moved to Guam we now had to spend for gas, which originally cost us $400 monthly. But now because of the rollbacks we are actually saving $100 monthly,” she said, while adding that compared to Saipan, gas in Guam is cheaper.
Sun Palace staff Marilyn Montano, for her part, said the decrease is gas prices represents very good savings for her.
“I spend $40 in two weeks but now I think my $40 will last for three weeks so I can buy some food on my gas savings,” she said.
Saipan motorists may be paying for their gas considerably lower than three months ago, but the island’s gas prices are still the highest in the nation.
According to the website www.fuelgaugereport.com, the average cost of regular gas in the U.S. mainland is $2.076 per gallon, premium is $2.49 per gallon, while diesel is $2.923 per gallon.
In terms of states, Missouri has the cheapest gas at $1.73 per gallon, while Hawaii pays the most expensive gas in the Union at $3.39 per gallon.
