Leaders of the municipalities of Saipan, Northern Islands, and Tinian will be hosting relief efforts for the island of Rota.

Saipan and Northern Islands Municipal Council staff Frances Muña said that Saipan, Tinian, and the Northern Islands municipal officials will officially kick off the Rota typhoon relief drive this week.

Muña indicated that a press conference on the relief effort is scheduled before the end of this week and more details will be forthcoming by then.

“Since taking their oath of office earlier in the year, Wednesday was the first time [Saipan] Mayor David M. Apatang and [Northern Islands] Mayor Jerome Aldan met with the municipal council for a common purpose and that was the desire to forge an effective partnership bashed on shared values and common interest to benefit the public,” Muña said. “Topping the partnership agenda was the Rota typhoon relief drive.”

The SNIMC members are chair Antonia M. Tudela, vice chair Alice Igitol, and secretary Reina Camacho. They met with the two mayors for over an hour during lunch to come up with a framework on the relief drive.

Despite Tinian Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas’ absence, Muña said that San Nicolas gave his pledge of unity and support, which would include the Tinian Municipal Council joining the newly formed municipal partnership group work on the relief drive for Rota.

“Mayor Apatang and municipal officials will be joined by their Tinian and Northern Islands counterparts for the kickoff event. The local municipal leadership is asking the local communities on Saipan and Tinian to open their hearts to our sister island of Rota during this time of need and distress,” she said.

In related news, SNIMC will be holding its second regular council session this Thursday, June 4, starting at 2pm at their office in Chalan Kanoa.
