Saipan Mayor’s Office still seeks more funds for heavy equipment
The Saipan Mayor’s Office still need funds to acquire more heavy equipment for road repairs on secondary roads.
Although the office is okay now, it still needs to get more heavy equipment, said special assistant Henry Hofschneider.
“We still have limited funding from our federal grant and we will be putting out a request for proposals…We still have about $71,000 left and we’re going to spend most—at least $50,000 for heavy equipment and $20,000 some for heavy equipment parts or training,” Hofschneider said.
The Saipan Mayor’s Office currently has one dump truck, two riding mowers, two backhoes, and equipment for maintenance that they recently purchased through a $413,000 grant from the Office of Insular Affairs.
They have also used $100,000 from last year’s appropriation from the Saipan and Northern Islands Legislative Delegation for a bucket truck and other equipment.
Hofschneider said they plan to apply for OIA funding once again, and may apply for the same amount that they secured last year.
“We might ask for the same amount because we still need a small road compactor, payloader, and a smaller dump truck,” he said.
The deadline for the grant is in October.
The lack of funds to add more full-time employees has also been an issue. The additional FTEs will be utilized as community workers.
