Saipan Marathon in spotlight

Various competitions were held last week with the 7th Saipan Marathon the biggest of them all, drawing nearly 800 participants.
Saipan runner Mamiko Oshima-Berger led the winners in the annual event, reclaiming the women’s marathon title she lost for two straight years (2010 and 2011). Beijing’s Shuai Yang took the men’s crown, while former Olympian Eric Wainaina Wahinya of Kenya ruled the ultra marathon (50K).
Noriko Jim clinched her fourth straight 10K championship, while Charles Epperson won for the first time in the shortest race of the week. Saipan’s Terra Allen and Japan’s Shogo Tamura topped the half marathon.
Other notable events last week were the Marianas Interscholastic Sports Organization Girls Volleyball League playoffs and the Marianas Kids Cup.
Saipan International School clinched the MISO girls volleyball crown after beating Grace Christian Academy in the finals, while ATAC and Ball Poppers ruled the U17 and U14 divisions of the Marianas Cup.
Also last week, on-going leagues continued their regular season games. In the DLX/Miller Lite caging, Island Apparel/Sunrisers, Blue Haus, Shirley’s Coffee Shop, QQ Rent A Car, and Andhok’s Grille posted separate wins. In the Saipan Little League, the Hustlers, Red Sox, Ol’Aces, IT&E, Jets II, and Falcons downed their respective foes at the Francisco “Tan Ko” Palacios and Miguel “Tan Ge” Pangelinan ballfields. Over at the Capital Hill Ballfield, SaiPal and Familia split their games in the Chamolinian slow-pitch league.
At the Oleai Sports Complex Field, Ehime University’s senior strikers completed the visitors’ three-game sweep after beating the CNMI Team. Ehime’s junior squad earlier defeated the CNMI Team and a selection of Saipan players.
Still in football, the U15 girls and boys and U18 boys spring league opened with defending champions MP United Silver (U15) and MP United U18 winning their first game of the season. Other Week 1 winners were boys U15’s Matansa and Paire, U18’s Matansa, and girls U15’s Matansa and Paire.
