Saipan Ice, TBK down foes

Saipan Ice & Water Company and TBK Mechanics cruised past separate opponents in the 2014 MDX Amateur Radio Club Basketball League last weekend at the Gualo Rai Basketball Court.

Saipan Ice routed Chinatown, 79-59, in last Friday’s curtain-raiser, while TBK Mechanics dominated Gwap Gang, 74-64, in last Saturday’s opener. IT&E played the Pelicans in last Saturday’s second match, while MDX got a win via default over Natural Mystic last Friday.

Syl “The Deal” Teregeyo anchored Saipan Ice’s 20-point victory over Chinatown, as he scored a game-high 22 points. He knocked down 10 points in the fourth quarter alone, including a string of 8 points to turn a close match to a blowout.

Before Teregeyo’s explosion, Saipan Ice was only ahead by 6 points at the end of the third quarter, 48-42. Saipan Ice went on to sizzle for 31 points, nearly doubling the output (17) of the entire Chinatown crew in the final canto. Justin Cayading and Derrick Rangamar also contributed in Saipan Ice’s fourth-quarter assault, as they nailed 6 points apiece.

Pete Lizama paced Chinatown with his 16 points, but was held to two field goals in the payoff quarter, making the team’s first and last basket.

In last Saturday’s opening match, TBK had a solid offense in the first half to set up the double-digit victory.

It scored 17 points in the first quarter and limited Gwap Gang to four field goals to take early control of the match. TBK then stretched the lead at halftime, 42-23, as Junar Guiab finished the second quarter with 7 straight points.

Gwap Gang never recovered from thereon, as siblings Ivan and Christian Devero gave TBK a steady source of points, while big man Joe Acosta also contributed to the cause. Christian and Acosta chipped in 12 markers apiece to back up the 16 of Ivan. Guiab also had twin digits, tallying 11 markers, while Francis Rebuyon and Raymond Velasco combined for 16. John Darag led Gwap Gang with his 16 points and although two of his teammates also finished in double figures, their baskets came when the game was already decided.
