Saipan Awaodori off to Japan
Seven members of the Saipan Awaodori Team will join the Tokyo Tensuiren group for a series of performances this August in Tokyo, Japan.
Three dancers and one musician left Wednesday last week with Saipan Awaodori Team organizer Misako Kamata, while two more musicians and a dancer will follow to join them.
Saipan Awaodori Team members who already left for Japan include Tyvieann They, Vianny Mettao, Marcela Heben, and Audie Ostonal. Those who would follow are Sheena Saures, Virginia Imperial, and Jessie Serrano.

Aside from performing with the Tokyo Tensuiren group in Tokyo, the Saipan Awaodori Team will also join them at the 61st Koenji Awaodori Festival on Aug. 24 and 25. Koenji Awaodori Festival is the second largest Awa Dance Festival in Japan, second only to Tokushima Prefecture’s Obon Festival.
Saipan Awaodori Team is coordinated by PDM Promoters Inc., a CNMI non-profit corporation.
The awaodori dance, when literally translated to English, means “fool’s dance.” Awa means fool, while odori means dance. (PR)
