Saipan Awaodori collects almost 600 lbs of garbage
Members of the Saipan Awaodori collected close to 600 lbs of trash during their monthly cleanup of Garapan last Saturday.
The cleanup, spearheaded by Misako Kamata, the chief executive officer and director of PDM Promoters Inc., picked up trash in the Paseo de Marianas area, along alleys between Coral Tree Avenue, Beach Road, and American Memorial Park.
The group, consisting of 10 Saipan Awaodori members along with five Kinpachi Restaurant staff, collected 580 lbs of trash from 9am to 11am.
“One of our missions is to clean, educate, and involve the local children through volunteerism,” Kinpachi Restaurant manager Sonia Siwa noted in an email to Saipan Tribune. “Our cleanup last Sept. 1, 2018, was supposed to be for our August cleanup.”
According to Siwa, the weather was not too cooperative in August, causing the group to postpone the cleanup of the area.
The group would be joining the International Coastal Cleanup of the Bureau of Environmental and Coastal Quality on Sept. 15.
“We appreciate the relentless help and monetary support of our two major sponsors: T-Galleria Saipan and the TSL Foundation, as well as BECQ and the Department of Public Works Division of Solid Waste Management for waiving the fee of trash disposal,” she said.
