Saipan Agricultural Fair to be held on June 27
At their April 7 meeting, the Saipan Agricultural Fair Association decided to hold this year’s fair on June 27, a Saturday. According to newly elected SAFA president Michael Ogo, June is the month with the most crops available on island. The decision allows farmers 90 days to produce fruits and vegetables for the competition.
The association hopes to receive funds from the Saipan and Northern Island Legislative Delegation to help offset the costs of the fair. Sales of advertisement pages and vendor fees will also help to compensate costs. SAFA is seeking for the following sponsorships: Platinum, $5,000; Gold, $3,000; Silver, $2,000; and Bronze, $1,000. Interested donors may contact SAFA at 664-8512. The business community has also generously donated in-kind and monetary donations in the past.
“This is a community event for the whole family and we welcome any in kind or monetary contributions from the public,” Ogo said.
Farmers and ranchers are encouraged to start preparing their crops and livestock for entry. Pre-registration and updated rule books will be announced soon. The 2015 Fair will take place on June 27 at the 4-H Building in Susupe.
Ogo has been involved in previous Agriculture Fairs and is the Aquaculture Extension Agent within the Northern Marianas College CREES. Co-chairing the annual event is Manuel Tenorio, director for the Division of Agriculture. (SAFA)
