Students of San Antonio Elementary School learned about the value of health and wellness during the Health Fair for school year 2011-2012 held Thursday.
About 11 government agencies took part in the annual event, which the school has hosted for about eight years now.
First grade teacher Hilda Rios, who coordinated the fair with school counselor Daisy Villagomez-Bier, said they feature different topics and presentations each time and “it just gets better and better every year.”
Rios said the students visit each station set up by participating agencies, which then discuss their designated topics. Some of the topics covered include healthy heating, exercise, fire safety, immunization shots, alcohol and tobacco abuse, and child abuse.
“We want to get our agencies that deal with health every day and partner with them to share with our students their roles in the community in terms of keeping the public safe and healthy,” Rios told Saipan Tribune.
Through this event, Rios said they expect to their students to accomplish their schoolwide learning results called CREST: Critical thinkers and problem solvers, Responsible citizens of a global society, Effective communicators, Self-directed lifelong learners, and Technologically literate.
“I hope that whatever the students learn from these agencies, they will take it with them at home or in the community. We take a lot of things for granted, including being healthy. But being healthy is.very important for everyone,” added Rios.
School principal James Sablan said the health fair is a “great opportunity” to promote health and wellness in school as well as inform students that they have a lot of partner agencies in the community that are willing to help them.
