Rep. Christina E. Sablan (D-Saipan) said Tuesday it’s not confirmed that House Speaker Edmund S. Villagomez (Ind-Saipan) will be her running-mate as lieutenant governor under the NMI Democratic Party for the November 2022 gubernatorial election.

In response to Saipan Tribune’s inquiry about talks that Villagomez will be her running-mate, Sablan, who is the Democrats’ candidate for governor, said she is still meeting with potential candidates.

“The process is ongoing,” she said.

The lawmaker said the Party’s Search Committee continues to assist and provide valuable feedback.

Villagomez himself told Saipan Tribune Tuesday that there has been no confirmation that he is Sablan’s running-mate.

Villagomez has been representing Precinct 3 in the House of Representatives since the 18th Legislature. He was the top vote-getter for Precinct 3 at the Nov. 3, 2021, general election.

Last January, representatives elected Villagomez as speaker for the 22nd Legislature, ending the Republican Party’s decades-old control of the House.
