Sablan out as CUC board chair
David Sablan Jr. is out as Commonwealth Utilities Corp. board chairman.
In a 4-2 vote yesterday afternoon, the CUC board of directors voted Adelina Roberto, previously board secretary, as the new board chair.
Board members Joe Torres, Chris Concepcion, and Eric San Nicolas voted for Roberto, who also voted for herself, as did Sablan. Diego M. Songao voted for Sablan.
Following the vote, Sablan asked if there was a problem with his leadership.
According to sources present during the discussion, the dissenting party cited “no transparency” and “dictatorship” in their answer.
When asked to comment on these barbs, Sablan said, “That’s fine.”
“That’s their opinion. That doesn’t faze me one bit. What’s important is that we’re all one team and achieving the objectives that we need to provide the best service to the CNMI at the least possible cost. That has a lot of dynamics to be considered. I’m still part of the board and I will continue to provide my knowledge and my expertise on utilities matters.”
“I have no problem with [the vote],” he added.
The reorganization of the board was not noted in the original agenda available to media, directors, and management at the beginning of yesterday’s board meeting.
At the meeting’s beginning, Torres had asked that the reorganization be added into the agenda. A motion was carried to do so.
Sablan is a former chairman of the Guam Power Authority board. The directors have a new chair, after then-acting governor Jude U. Hofschneider swore in Roberto and Sablan last February, effectively reviving the CUC board nine years after the last one was abolished.
