The Runnin’ Rebels and Division of Youth Services bagged contrasting wins in the 2014 BANMI Youth League at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

In the U21 division, the Runnin’ Rebels debuted with a 51-44 victory over Laly 4 last Wednesday night, while in the U18 pairing, DYS dominated the CNMI Girls Nationals, 73-58.

DYS notched its fourth triumph in five games to remain in second place in the team standings behind unbeaten Tinian (3-0), while the Nationals are still winless after four matches.

A 24-12 scoring in the second quarter allowed DYS to cruise to victory, as it turned a 17-11 lead to a 41-23 advantage at the end of the first half. Patrick Salalila anchored DYS’ breakaway in the second period as he nailed 12 in the pivotal frame.

The CNMI Girls Nationals began falling apart in the second canto, as it was held to six field goals with only Irish Pagarao making more than two baskets for their depleted team. Only six players suited up for the Nationals, as they clearly lack the manpower to match up with DYS’ 14-man crew.

Salalila top-scored for DYS with his 20 points, while Adrian De Luna and Aaron Pamintuan chipped in 11 apiece. Pagarao led the Nationals with her 15 markers, while Rachel Abrams added 14.

In last Wednesday’s match, the Runnin’ Rebels used a balanced offense to hand Laly 4 its fourth loss in as many games.

Only Dizon Magofna scored in twin digits for the Runnin’ Rebels with his 10 points, but his six other teammates contributed at least two baskets apiece to give the squad a winning debut.

In contrast, Laly 4 had two players breaking in double figures with Sylvester Kapileo and Derek Olopai firing 15 and 12 points, respectively, however only three other players hit the board for the squad.

The Runnin’ Rebels led at the end of each quarter and gained more cushion in the second half with seven different players contributing to the team’s cause.
