The Northern Marianas Rugby Union is planning to start a competition in a few weeks and hosted a clinic last Sunday at the CPA Field to prepare for the tournament.

The group brought in Rob Leon Guerrero and the World Rugby certified rugby 7s referee conducted a clinic for players of four squads—Uritao Rugby, Future Marines, MODE Fitness Gorilla, and Alesch Rugby Team.

The clinic, according to NMRU vice president and team director Ed Arriola, Jr. focused on the rules of the game, breakdown, ball presentation, fundamental catching and passing skills, and understanding when to attack offensively and defensively.

“We wanted our players to learn the core values of rugby both on and off the field, develop technical skills of the game, and build confidence in playing rugby. Rob brings a wealth of Rugby 7s experience and our players needed that,” Arriola added.

The NMRU also said that 90% of the players from the four teams are newcomers so the clinic was very significant as they prepare for their debut in the sport. (Roselyn B. Monroyo)
