Rotary Club president-elect Curtis Dancoe said the Rotary Club decided to make this donation because they have a sister club in Chuuk Lagoon.

“We have a sister club in Chuuk and, as a matter of fact, as a part of Rotary Club International, we belong to a group that is called the Pacific Basin Group, so that is why we’re donating these for relief efforts,” Dancoe said during the presentation of the donation last Friday at McDonald’s main store along Middle Road.

According to Dancoe, there are eight Rotary clubs under the Pacific Basin Group and they are located on Saipan, in Pohnpei, Chuuk, Palau, and Guam.

“When disaster strikes we tend to look toward our sister clubs to see if they need any of our help. We actually allocated $1,500 worth of rice and we’ll be sending rice there so they can start rebuilding their lives,” Dancoe said.

“It will be divided and sent to the typhoon relief efforts. This is in combination with other relief efforts,” he added.

McDonald’s will be accepting donations of non-perishable items (clothing, towels, and tents) or food items such as rice, canned goods, and bottled water until Tuesday, April 14.

The shipping container will be parked at the McDonald’s Middle Road location where community members would be able to drop off any items they wish to donate.
