Rotary celebrates 50th year
The Rotary Club of Saipan is celebrating its 50th anniversary tonight with ’60s-themed party at Surf Club in Susupe.
“This event is for Rotarians to get together and revisit past projects, look into new ones, and figure out where we are headed. Our club was chartered on March 16, 1968. We hope to have a great night to reflect on what we Rotarians have been doing, are doing, and how we will proceed into the future,” said Rotary president Thomas Thornburgh.
He is proud of what the organization has contributed to the CNMI community since 1968. There are currently 45 members of the local Rotary Club.
“We’ve been here since 1968 and plan on being here 50 more years. The local Rotary Club has evolved in the past 50 years as a strong entity providing for the betterment of our people in sports, in literacy, and during typhoons like Soudelor,” said Thornburgh.
The Rotary Club is currently working on both its Garapan Skate Park and Kagman Family Park projects. It is also known for its popular fundraiser, Las Vegas Night.
“We are currently distributing dictionaries to all our third graders in the public and private schools. We also plan to bring back the Rock to Read on April 21, 2018,” Thornburgh added.
The local Rotary Club also has the Interact Club for high school students and Rotaract for college students. It also organizes youth exchange programs, where students get to fly to Japan to learn about its culture and vise versa for Japanese students visiting Saipan.
