Rota—Mayor Efraim M. Atalig and the 18th Rota Municipal Council are working closely to revive youth programs on Rota beginning this summer.

Rota Mayor’s Office spokesman Ivan Mereb said in an interview last Saturday that Atalig and the Rota Municipal Council are spearheading the first-ever revival of motocross events on Rota, and already have plans to restart the Rota Little League Association and the Youth Softball program soon.

In line with this, Rota’s leadership held an event on May 28 that was both a soft opening of the island’s new motocross track and a celebration of the revival of the Youth Motocross program. Saipan Tribune archives show that the last time a Rota motocross event was reported on was in 2004.

Rota leadership also celebrated the restarting of its Rota Youth Softball program with an opening ceremony last June 3.

“These are…run by [non-governmental organizations], but the Mayor’s Office as well as the 18th RMC are going to join hand-in-hand on this, take the lead, and support,” said Mereb.

In a separate interview, Atalig said that he will continue to be an advocate for youth programs. “I’m all in support of any program for our youth here. After all, they’re the next generation. I want them to take advantage of the opportunities we present to them. …I’m all for them to improve their lives,” said Atalig.
