Rota library grand opening set today

Rota residents will finally be able to access library services with the grand opening of the Antonio C. Atalig Memorial Rota Public Library at 1pm today.

Mayor Melchor Mendiola, members of the Rota Municipal Council and the CNMI Library Council, Rota lawmakers, educational partners, and other community leaders on island and throughout the Commonwealth are expected to take part in this historic celebration, said John O. Gonzales.

Gonzales, executive director of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library, said the opening will unveil and bring online the last of the three public libraries on the CNMI’s three major islands.

Two staffers of the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library were sent to the Rota Public Library in March following the establishment’s soft opening on Feb. 27. The two assisted the Rota staffers in the use of the library’s information technology as well as in categorizing and cataloging collections.

Gonzales emphasized that communities will not prosper or thrive without a vibrant public library, which plays a role by satiating the search for knowledge and to produce an educated citizenry.

Gonzales urged CNMI residents and leaders, particularly those from Rota, to support the Rota Public Library. For more information, call 532-0120.
