Fishermen throughout the Marianas are gearing up for the 2018 Rota Cliff Fishing Derby set for Aug 3 to 5.

The designated derby fishing sites for the weekend event include popular fishing spots As Matmos and Pona Point cliff sites. Registration is $25. Derby orientation will be at 5pm on Aug. 3 at the Guata Beach Park, followed by the start of the derby. The derby will end at 10am on Aug. 5, followed by an island-style awards banquet at 1pm at Teteto Beach.

“The Marianas Visitors Authority is pleased to again be working with the Rota Mayor’s Office to welcome fishermen for our cliff fishing derby later this month,” said MVA Rota Field Operations supervisor Sandra Atalig.

“Last weekend was the Saipan International Fishing Tournament, and we invite all fishermen to join us later this month for another great event on Rota.”

Prizes will be awarded for the most variety, biggest fish, and for total weight. The MVA is providing cash prizes for the Top 3 finishers in the categories of biggest fish and total weight.

“Sport fishing is a small but important niche market for The Marianas, and it’s another prime example of how our rich natural resources are important for the tourism industry,” said MVA managing director Christopher A. Concepcion. “We would love to see more participants at this year’s Rota Cliff Fishing Derby, especially from the neighboring islands of Guam, Saipan, and Tinian, and we will continue to work with the Rota Mayor’s Office to promote and grow this annual event.”

The weekend event is organized by the Rota Mayor’s Office with support from Rota Municipal Council, Rota Legislative Delegation, Department of Public Safety, Department of Fire & Emergency Services, Dept. of Public Works, Ambros Inc., and the MVA. (PR)
