Almost two months after groundbreaking, road clearing is now being done to prepare for the paving of four roads in Precinct 5.

Hawaiian Rock started the road clearing on Chopak Drive in Kagman. More than 1,000 feet has been cleared from the intersection point of Forbidden Island Road and Chopak Drive, according to Rep. Lorenzo Deleon Guerrero (Ind-Saipan).

The drainage area is also being cleared of vegetation for the runoff leading downward to a designated basin.

Hawaiian Rock started the road clearing Wednesday last week.

“Right now they are clearing everything, all these debris here [intersection between Chopak and Dyers Fig Street] will be removed as soon as the contractors are done clearing further down Chopak Drive,” Deleon Guerrero said.

“Hopefully they can finish this fast. Residents are happy right now in the area because paving is finally being done and hopefully by August the paving will be done,” he added.

Aside from Chopak Drive, the three other roads that will finally be paved are Pine Drive and Mangga Street in Kagman III and Katbun Road in San Vicente.

The funding for the road-paving projects was made possible after Gov. Eloy S. Inos signed a local law in July 2014 appropriating more than $2.17 million in bond funds for Saipan projects. Of the $2.17 million, $600,000 went to the Precinct 5 road-paving project.

Since the first issuance of homesteads in Kagman III in December 1993, roads in phases 3 and 4 of the village has had little to no paved roads. Twenty-two years later, Kagman III will finally see actual groundwork on three of its roads with one other road paving in San Vicente.

One these are done, Deleon Guerrero and Precinct 5 colleague Rep. Francis S. Taimanao (Ind-Saipan) aim to also fix roads in Kannat Tabla and Kagman IV.
