Miyawaki, who is also into soccer and swimming, moved up to a higher age group after topping the U10 singles event of the same tournament last season and bagged this year’s U12 division crown following a finals sweep against Ji Min Woo, 6-4, 6-2, last Monday at the American Memorial Park tennis courts.
Counting his victory over Woo, Miyawaki got three wins en route to ruling the eight-player field. He started out his title bid in the division with a tough 3-6, 6-4, 19-17 win over Eugene Park in the quarterfinals of the lower half bracket. Then in the semis, Miyawaki had an easier time against Eubin Park, as the former took the first set, 6-0, and was awarded the win after the latter retired just before the start of the second set.
At the bottom half of the bracket, Woo made it to the finals following a 6-0, 2-6, 10-8 upset over the top-seeded Jamin Elliot. Woo and Elliot arranged their semis showdown after beating Chris Kim, 6-2, 6-3, and Brian Kim, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, in the quarterfinals, respectively.
Meanwhile, Nicky Nichols and Seung Jin Baek completed the champions’ list in the men’s division singles contests.
Nichols prevailed in the round-robin 40-and-over singles, holding an unbeaten record in three games. He won over Eric Abragan, 6-2, 4-6, 10-3, downed Gary Ramsey, 6-4, 6-7, 10-3, and secured the division crown following a walkover victory versus Randy Steele last Monday.
Abragan settled for the runner-up honors following his 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 triumph also last Monday over Ramsey, who rounded out the Top 3 with his 6-2, 7-5 win against Steele earlier.
In the boys U10 singles, which also used a round-robin format, Seung Jin Baek bested three other players.
Baek sealed the division crown after slipping past Daniel Kang last Monday, 6-4. Both Baek and Kang were unbeaten coming into to the title-deciding match with the former shutting down Richard Steele, 6-0, and dominating Anthony Gregoire, 6-3. Kang had a similar 6-3 triumph over Gregoire and topped Steele, 6-2. Steele saved third place in the division with his 6-4 win against Gregoire.
