Reyes clarifies role of casino commission

The Commonwealth Casino Commission’s main function is to regulate casino gaming in the island while being mindful of the casino license that the government has given.

Joseph Reyes, vice chairman of the casino commission, further said it is the Commonwealth Lottery Commission’s main job to review the licenses.

Reyes made the clarification after the commission met with representatives of Best Sunshine International, Ltd. on Capital Hill on Tuesday.

Best Sunshine met with the commission to essentially present the proposed “live” training facility that it plans to build in Garapan.

Reyes said the commission will now look at regulatory protocols that might be applicable to the “live” training facility.

He said the commission is “open-minded” and will look into regulations that are currently being used in places like Macau and the Philippines, where casinos are operating.

“Our role is mainly to look if regulations are being properly followed, while still being mindful of the casino license,” Reyes said.

Early this month, the roster for the five-man commission was finally completed, after months of deliberations and scrutiny.

Martin DLG. San Nicolas was the last one appointed to the post, joining commission chair Juan M. Sablan and members Reyes, Alvaro A. Santos, and Justin S. Manglona.

Sablan, Reyes, and Santos represent Saipan, Manglona represents Rota, while San Nicolas represents Tinian. The casino commission is allowed to have five commissioners, according to the law.
