Retardo, Kitami win June Ace
William C. Retardo and Pil Sun Kitami ruled their respective golf club’s June Ace of the Month tournaments held over the weekend in separate venues on the island.
Retardo topped the FilTaga Golfers Association’s monthly event last Sunday at the Kingfisher Golf Links in Talofofo, while Kitami prevailed in the CNMI Women’s Golf Association held last Saturday at the Coral Ocean Point Resort.
The FilTaga president finished with a pair of 37s at the front and back for a gross score of 74, but a five handicap earned him a 69 and a three-shot win over Adony Matutino, who scored a 72 and finished tied with club secretary Larry Pascual.
Raffy Piamonte registered a 73, while Gil Faller and Ely Buenaventura were tied at fifth to sixth places with their 75s.
Tony Cabrera (79), Ruben Avendano (86), John Matsumoto (87), and Nestor Siruelo (89) completed the standings.
Retardo, the Mariana Resort & Spa’s executive chef, was also one of the three par-3 winners at No. 15, while Piamonte and Faller won at Hole Nos. 6 and 12, respectively.
Retardo now joins Vic Roman (January), Jhun Ortiz (February), Ernie Lopez (March, Paul Bea (April), and Pascual (May) on the FilTaga yearend tournament to be held either in late December or early January 2016.
Kitami, meanwhile, bested 13 other female golfers to clinch the CWGA June monthly title.
She fired 44 and 46 at COP’s front and back for a 90 gross and with her 19 USGA handicap, she finished with a 71 for a one-shot victory over Yuko Togawa, who had a 72.
Kitami earned 15 points for her feat and Togawa 14, while Lorraine Babauta, who finished tied for third to sixth places with three others, earned 13 markers after the scorecard tiebreak.
Babauta along with Sherlyn Jones, Terry Guerrero, and Bennet Seman ended up with 73s, but they were ranked third to sixth places, respectively, based on the tiebreak.
Kimiko Abe (74), Seon Hee Kim (74), Setsuko Ogura (76), Dolores Yamagishi (77), and Mimi Salinas (79) were the other female golfers who competed in this month’s event.
Lou Kim also joined last Saturday’s event and scored a 70, but she failed to submit the required scorecard for handicap calculation purposes, while Hyung Sook Lee (101) and Anne Gillespi (130) are new members and their handicaps were not yet established.
