Resolution discovers first NMC president

Turns out that former Northern Marianas College president Agnes McPhetres, who is usually touted as the first president of the college, is not so, as discovered in a previous Senate resolution.

The House Committee on Judicial and Governmental Operations found out yesterday that McPhetres, as stated in House Speaker Rafael Demapan’s (R-Saipan) House Bill 20-133, is not the first president of NMC.

After digging through previous legislative records, it was found that, according to Senate Resolution 3-56, Catherine J. Porter served as the first president of NMC.

H.B. 20-133 seeks to rename NMC building P in honor of the achievements and contributions of McPhetres, who was apparently the second president of the college.

The committee amended the bill to reflect the newly unearthed fact.

The committee further amended the bill to allow the signage of Building P, which would be known as the “Agnes Manglona McPhetres Administrative Building” if enacted, to conform to the signage already existing within NMC.

Based on NMC’s comments on H.B. 20-133, the college does not support the bill.

HB 20-133 now heads to the House floor for action.
