Registration for Filipino overseas voting begins
The registration for Filipino overseas absentee voting for the May 2022 general elections officially began yesterday, Dec. 16.
To register, Filipinos in the CNMI simply have to go to the consular outreach mission of the Philippine Consulate General on Saipan, bring their passport, and then register to vote, according to Philippine consul to Guam Mark Francis C. Hamoy.
Those who have already registered and want to verify if they are still on the active voter rolls, or have been deactivated, could also go to the consular mission to check.
The Philippine Commission on Election updates the list of voters after every election to purge the names of people who have registered but have failed to vote in two consecutive elections.
“Filipinos need to re-register when they had failed to vote for two consecutive election cycles,” Hamoy said. “If they did not vote this year, and they did not vote in 2016, that means they have failed to vote in two election cycles. It is highly probable then that they have been removed from the system.”
In addition, Filipino voters who moved to the CNMI from another country should request for a transfer of their voting location.
“For example, if they used to work in Saudi Arabia and now, they are in CNMI, they have to request for a transfer of voting location. They have to show up [at a consular mission] and present the needed documents.”
The next consular mission in Saipan is tentatively set in January.
