Red ribbons signify battle vs drugs
In recognition of Red Ribbon Week, several students from different schools waved red ribbons along Beach Road yesterday, signifying their commitment to the fight against illegal drugs.
Students and teachers also held up banners and posters.
Shawn Anderson, the acting U.S. attorney for the Districts of Guam and the CNMI, flew from Guam to Saipan yesterday to take part in the ribbon waving.
“It’s a great campaign that…keeps kids discouraged from using drugs,” said Anderson.
Anderson told Saipan Tribune a similar campaign is taking place in the U.S. mainland. “But I’d have to say the community here supports it more than anywhere I’ve seen in the mainland,” said Anderson. “It’s really incredible.”
According to Anderson, he was also given the opportunity to spend a day on Tinian and Rota to join the hundreds of students who are spreading awareness about the impact of illegal drugs.
Saipan Southern students Morzina Khan, Lou Vailon, and Daryl Cortez, who took part in yesterday’s ribbon waving, said this was their first time to participate in the campaign and they enjoyed the entire experience.
They said they are aware that drugs play an oversize role in the lives of the youth.
Over 50 students and advocates took part in the red ribbon waving yesterday. This year’s theme is “Your future is the key, so stay drug-free.”
Red Ribbon Week is an alcohol, tobacco, and other drug and violence prevention awareness campaign observed annually in October in the United States.
