Red Kettle season kicks off this week

The Salvation Army has added two red kettle spots this year and is looking for volunteers.

According to Salvation Army ministry leader Wayne Gillespie, the Salvation Army will be expanding its kettle ringing sites from just the Joeten Superstore to the Joeten Supermarket in Susupe, and at the I Love Saipan store in Garapan.

“We are still in very gravely serious financial situation. We’ll always have funding challenges…we expanded the kettle sites this year because we’re hoping we can triple the amount of money we normally raise through kettles,” Gillespie said.

The kickoff of kettle season will be on Thursday during the Salvation Army’s annual Thanksgiving lunch. Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and first lady Diann Torres will make the first donation of the year.

The lunch will be held at the Salvation Army soup kitchen in Gualo Rai. The entire community is welcome to grab a meal or eat with the Salvation Army volunteers and staff.

Gillespie said that this year, they will be preparing roughly 700 meals and will also be delivering meals to homeless individuals in Kagman and Koblerville, and to families who are still getting back on their feet after Typhoon Soudelor.

The official starting day of kettle season will be on Friday.
