The American Red Cross-NMI Chapter recently completed The Pillowcase Project-Disaster Awareness and Preparedness Presentations to all 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders at Koblerville Elementary School.

The Pillowcase Project teaches the students and their families how to prepare for disasters. The Pillowcase Project curriculum consists of three core principles: Learn, Practice, and Share.

The students were taught about hazards, how to prepare for emergencies, enhance coping skills, practice what they have learned, and share their knowledge with friends and family.

The program emphasizes the importance of developing an emergency communications plan, fire escape plan, and emergency contact cards.

The Pillowcase Project program also teaches the students the importance of preparedness in a fun and hands-on way.

The hands-on activities builds confidence and prepares children to take action during an emergency. The program also teaches students how to create their own emergency supply kits by packing essential items in a pillowcase for easy transport during an emergency. Students will have the opportunity to decorate and personalize their pillowcases.

The Red Cross will be planning more Pillowcase presentations at other elementary schools throughout the year.
