Recycled boat race slated for April 25
Together with your team, build a “boat” out of recycled materials and hope that it floats across the ocean to win trophies and prizes.
The challenge: Build your own boat out of recycled materials and be the first across the finish line.
There will be two races, one for 18 and above and one for 17 and below. Race organizer Cal Westergard said all boats will line up in the water at the start of each race. There will be a person with a flag to signal the start of the race. Once the flagman signals the start of the race, it’s on!
The first boat to fully cross the finish line gets first place, winning $200. The second boat to fully cross the finish line gets second place and $100. A $100 prize for the most creative boat will be given as well. A panel of judges will decide on which boat is most creative.
Interested individuals or teams must register in advance with BECQ. The race itself will be at the Kilili Beach, across the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium on Saturday, April 25, with the race starting at 10:30am. You must show up at 9:30am to launch your boat.
Use recycled materials only. Duct tape is the only material you are allowed to purchase. No prefabricated boats. No motors. Your boat must be manually powered. Sail-powered boats are OK. Your whole boat must cross the finish line. If part of your boat falls off you must retrieve it before finishing. No littering. You may have more than one person paddling your boat. The course will be 100 meters.
