Northern Marianas College recent graduate Louie Nigh has been awarded two prestigious scholarships to attend Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania.

Scholarships were extended to him because of his nearly perfect grade point average and his excellent SAT scores, in which he received 100 percent in Math.

Having been a member of the national Phi Theta Kappa honor society, he received a generous award for his high GPA.

He also received a National Science Foundation award, a prestigious award which pays part of his tuition and allows him to spend the summer of 2013 doing research in biochemistry with a professor at the college.

Upon completion of his research, he will present his findings to the college. The 17-year-old Nigh will begin his studies at Juniata as a junior.

Juniata College is a small college of about 1,500 students and is well-known for the success of its students.

Ninety-five percent of graduates wanting to go on to medical schools are accepted into the schools of their choices. Its law school has an almost 100 percent admission rate into PhD programs.

It is also rated highly by many organizations. US News and World Report ranks it 81st among 3,800 colleges, and Forbes rates it as number 143. It is also ranked No. 1 in Loren Pope’s “Colleges that Change Lives.” With these and other scholarships he has received, the cost of Nigh’s tuition and room and board are nearly 100 percent paid until graduation.

Nigh expects to go on to medical school and then to study neurosurgery. His parents give credit to NMC for making it possible for Nigh to begin accomplishing his goals at such a young age. According to his father, Richard, owner of Affordable Enterprises, the administration showed a high level of professionalism and took into account Nigh’s potential.
