Racism is wrong no matter what
I would like to offer some advice to our community. As a student of the CNMI, I would like to direct your attention to racism happening here on our island. Although racism in Saipan is subtle compared to other countries, it is still a serious problem in our community.
Racism on the island often occurs through inappropriate jokes, social media, and foul language. People regard these racial comments as though it is “not a big deal.” However, racism whether big or small can hurt other people. Just because the problem is small, it does not mean that there is no problem at all.
Racism has always been a major problem in the world. Many social groups protested for racial freedom. For example, Nelson Mandela, the first black president of South Africa, fought his whole life for freedom from apartheid. He wanted to prove that men are equal no matter his race, color, or background.
Although racism will always exist in the world, it can be reduced. I suggest that all schools strive to plant a sense of respect for others in their students. One way is by banning the use of crude language toward other students. If students learn to treat others the way they want to be treated, racism will be reduced greatly.
Racism is wrong no matter what because all people are equal. No one is greater than another. Therefore, all citizens of the CNMI should do all they can to remove racism from our home.
