Quizon, Matsunaga end droughts in weekly darts, billiards

Paul “The Flash” Quizon and Ray Matsunaga finally ended their respective title droughts in the weekly darts and billiards tournaments held last week at Jokers Bar & Restaurant in Garapan.

Quizon has not won the weekly title since the tournament started last Sept. 16 but won’t be denied this time as he defeated two-time winner Jeff “The Joker” Barit in the darts finals.

It was actually the second time that Quizon bested Barit as he was also the one who sent the latter to the loser’s bracket as part of his four-game winning streak.

Quizon was right on target from his first match against Peter Togawa and also scored wins over K.J. Villagomez and Pam Ybanez to earn the top seeding in the semifinals.

Barit, on the other hand, ended Togawa’s bid for a Cinderella finish in their semis match in the loser’s bracket to earn a second shot against Quizon.

Togawa downed Jun “Shocker” Santos, Jose Orosco, Ybanez, and George “Masta G” Sablan to move one win away of arranging a finals match against his opening game tormentor.

Barit foiled his plan but also failed in his bid to win a third weekly crown as he lost to Quizon in the finals. He won the weekly tournament twice on Oct. 7 and Oct. 21.

Quizon went home with $70 and a trophy, while Barit settled for the $40 cash prize.

Matsunaga also snapped a two-month long drought after beating Manny Mariano in the billiards finals. He ruled the first edition of the weekly tournament by beating Sequioco on Sept. 16.

Matsunaga, after that win, has not won the title as he either suffered an early exit or lose in the finals. He almost ended his misfortunes last Oct. 14 but Rodel Dela Cruz thwarted his bid in the finals.

He went undefeated in the tournament as he one at a time dispatched Rey Hermogenes, Randy Sablan, Warlee Ellama, and Mariano to clinch the first finals berth.

Mariano earned a finals rematch with Matsunaga after besting Sablan, Hermogenes, and Ellama in the loser’s bracket.

Matsunaga went home with $40 cash and a trophy, while Mariano pocketed $20.

In other news, the Saipan Electronic Darts Association is still accepting team sign ups for the eight divisions that will be played for the Bud Light Dart League’s new season.
