Quitugua rules Filtaga/Emon Lodge golf
Danny Quitugua survived Saturday’s early morning downpour to become $500 richer after ruling the Filtaga/Eman Lodge 179 Master Golf tournament held at the Marianas Country Club in Marpi.
Quitugua shot a 51 and 40 on the front and back nines of MCC’s 6,449-yard layout but with the tournament using a Double Peoria format, he earned a 28.8 handicap and net score of 62.2.
The Peoria format is a one-day handicapping system that is mostly used in charity fundraising events and company outings since most golfers don’t have real handicap indexes. Organizers, under the Peoria format, secretly choose six holes—two par 3s, two par 4s and two par 5s—on the front and back nines before the start of the tournament. The players don’t know which holes have been picked.

Quitugua enjoyed a 5.2 winning margin over his closest pursuer Larry Pascual, who came in second place with a gross 89, but he only had a 21.6 handicap for a net score of 67.4 to pocket the $300 cash prize.
Jacinto Ramones rounded up the Top 3 finishers with a net 68.8—88 gross score and 19.2 handicap. He went home with $200.
Pascual, however, matched Quitugua’s cash prize after clinching two of the four closest to the pins in the Toshio Suzuki-designed golf course. He was the closest at the par-3 No.12 at 5.2 feet then was 17.25 feet away at No. 8, which was another par-3 hole.
Rudy Sablan claimed hole No. 6 after landing 1.8 feet away from the pin, while William Retardo was 6.6 feet away for the final closest to the pin contest at No. 16.
The Top 3 finishers joined 42 other golfers who survived the rain-soaked golf course during the one-day fundraising tournament.
Tournament organizers thanked everyone who joined and the sponsors for donating various raffle prizes. Proceeds from the weekend event will go to the Karidat Foundation for its various charity works.
