Quarantine fitness and eating intuitively

For those of you who take their training and fitness seriously, I’m certain you’re all going through withdrawals. Am I right? Well, I have a confession to make. It’s hard for me to get in a groove working out at home too. The rug was pulled out from under our feet just like that. And with the COVID-19 pandemic taking everyone hostage, it’s fair to say things have been rather bleak.

All things considered, though, this is for the collective good. With the level of compliance and empathy we’ve been showcasing, I’m confident we’ll get through this sooner rather than later.

Q: I’m not feeling the whole working out at home. With you asserting it’s not as efficient, I’d rather do something else. Can I just go for walks instead? Maintaining a high step count counts for something right?

A: Do whatever it is you want to do. In regards to what I brought up last week, at-home workouts can in fact be effective. We all have to make the best of this harrowing situation, and appreciate that staying active with whatever jibes well with you is a thousand times better than not doing anything at all. But the reason why I said they’re not as efficient as training in a fully equipped gym is because there’s only so much you can do before you start to run into some limitations, and that ultimately impacts adherence. There are numerous ways to spice it up, but truthfully, over a period of time, it’s not going to be as enjoyable. This is why I pointed out in the meantime it’s worthwhile to shift most of your attention toward other disciplines.

Q: These past few weeks have been a roller coaster. Since the news broke out about the first confirmed cases, my diet has been out of whack. Some days are good and some days are really bad. I feel guilty.

A: Let’s take a few steps back and be pragmatic. Don’t feel guilty. It’s okay because right now is not exactly the best time to be on a diet. However, you should still be eating sensibly. It doesn’t make any sense for you to overindulge when there’s clearly a drop in your activity level. Believe me, you don’t want to find yourself in a deeper hole than you began with.
