Put people’s interests first—Vinnie
Rep. Vinson E. Sablan (Ind-Saipan) called on his colleagues in the incoming 20th Legislature to always think of the welfare of their constituents when writing bills or making amendments. Inauguration is on Jan. 9. Sablan represents Precinct 3 with rookie lawmaker Alice Igitol (R-Saipan).
Sablan said the five-member independent minority is willing to work with the GOP super majority. The Republicans won 15 seats in the House of Representatives in the last general election in November and controls the Senate with seven seats.
“They have the numbers and we’re [minority] hoping to work closely with them. But the bottom line is we should handle the issues appropriately and to the best interest of the people,” Sablan told Saipan Tribune.
The GOP super majority has already settled the House leadership, with Rep. Rafael S. Demapan keeping the House speakership. Representative-elect Janet U. Maratita will be vice speaker, while Rep. Glenn L. Maratita of Rota will be the floor leader. Rep. Edmund S. Villagomez (Ind-Saipan) is the minority leader as agreed upon by his four colleagues.
“Certain issues that might be controversial must go through a certain process. Where voting could be done fairly and not just because of the party, we must ensure the community is part of the process. Let their voices be heard through public hearings,” said Sablan.
“It would be a lot smoother because if they all agree on some issues they have the votes, they have the numbers. We must be proponents of the community first. Even though they [people] were the ones who voted for us, they must also be part of the process as well. [They] community must also be aware and be informed of what issues would affect them.”
He remains positive in the incoming Legislature, especially with the new members. “We all have the same intention of doing what’s right for the people. We must lead by example to get the work done and see what issues should be discussed.”
Despite the minority not being offered committee chairmanships or memberships, Sablan said he would do his best if asked to be part of a particular committee.
“No, we have not gotten any offers or requests to chair any committees. I don’t expect to. But there’s more you could do with the issues as a chair in a committee.”
“I would do my part to help out. If they want me to be in a particular committee and if I’m comfortable with it then I’ll be part of it. But if I see that it is not my expertise, I will see if I could join it or see if I would be offered another committee,” he added.
