A high surf advisory is now in effect until 6pm today, Tuesday, along north facing reefs due to swells from winter storms moving off the coast of Japan. A high surf advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in the area, producing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.

There is also a high risk of rip currents through Friday afternoon.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, buoy data indicates that the north swell has increased enough to generate hazardous surf on north facing reefs. There is also a high risk of rip currents on north and east facing reefs. The hazardous surf will generate dangerous rip currents along north facing reefs. The east swell will generate a high risk of dangerous rip currents along east facing reefs through Friday.

There will be a high risk of dangerous rip currents along east facing reefs through Friday. The risk could extend to north facing reefs by today, Tuesday.

The public is being advised to avoid venturing out along north facing reefs and beaches. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Stay out of the water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
