Public warned of rough seas

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 6am Saturday. There is also a high risk of rip currents through late Friday night. A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6pm Friday.

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, large breaking waves of 10 to 12 feet are peaking and should diminish to between 9 and 11 feet last night and between 8 and 10 feet today along west facing reefs of Guam, Rota, Tinian, and Saipan.

Also, seas of 7 to 10 feet will be present in Marianas coastal waters until 6 pm Friday.

These conditions will create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

These west swells are being caused by fresh to strong monsoon flow and Typhoon Malakas.

The public is advised to stay out of the water along west facing reefs. Elsewhere, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don’t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Combined seas will decrease across the region through Friday. Seas could fall below hazardous levels of 10 feet as early as Friday for Guam and Rota waters.

Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in hazardous conditions. (PR/Saipan Tribnune)
