Public warned of rip currents, rough seas
The public on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are being warned that there is a high risk of rip currents through Thursday afternoon. A small craft advisory is also in effect from 6am Tuesday to 6am Sunday.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Guam and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, dangerous rip currents are present in east facing reefs of the Mariana Islands through Thursday afternoon.
Swimming will be hazardous. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
The public is advised to stay out of the water along east facing reefs. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water. Only swim near a lifeguard.
Also, starting today until Sunday, northeast winds of 15 to 25 knots and seas of 8 to 11 feet are expected in Marianas coastal waters. Seas and winds will remain at these levels for the next several days. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions. (PR)
