Public warned of rip currents, choppy seas
The public is being warned of a high rip current risk that is expected to last through Sunday afternoon. Also, a small craft advisory is in effect through Friday afternoon
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, dangerous rip currents are present along east facing reefs of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota through 6pm Sunday.
East winds of 15 to 25 knots with gusts of up to 30 knots and seas of 8 to 10 feet are expected along Marianas coastal waters through this Friday afternoon. Conditions will be hazardous to small craft. Highest seas will be east of the islands. Waves will diminish below criteria by Sunday, but are expected to build again around Tuesday.
Rip currents will likely continue through Sunday, briefly subside Monday, then the risk could become high along north facing reefs Tuesday or Wednesday.
Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Residents of Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are advised to avoid venturing out near reef lines facing east. Swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline, then head in to shore when you are out of the current.
Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions. (PR)
