Public warned of high surf today, rip currents ’til Friday
A high surf advisory remains in effect through tonight, while a high rip current risk is in effect through Friday. Also, a small craft advisory remains in effect through today, Tuesday.
Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, hazardous surf of 9 to 12 feet and dangerous rip currents will be present along east facing reefs of Saipan and Tinian.
The high surf advisory is likely to persist through at least tonight, Tuesday. The high rip current risk will linger through Friday.
This will create dangerous conditions for swimmers and beach goers. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The public is being advised to avoid venturing out toward east facing reefs. Inexperienced ocean goers should remain out of the water due to strong rip currents. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
On Rota, information received from the NWS show that there is a high risk for rip currents that will continue through Friday. An increase in east swell is expected to produce hazardous surf along east facing reefs through at least Tuesday night.
Also, combined seas of 8 to 10 feet with winds gusting to 25 knots will be seen along coastal waters of Tinian and Saipan through 6pm today, with the highest seas across eastern waters. Marine conditions will be hazardous for small craft. Inexperienced mariners, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid navigating in hazardous conditions. (PR)
