A high surf advisory now in effect until Tuesday morning and the public is also being warned of a high rip current risk now through Wednesday afternoon

Based on the information received from the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, and compiled at the CNMI Emergency Operations Center State Warning Point, hazardous surf of 9 to 12 feet and dangerous rip currents will be present along east facing reefs of Tinian and Saipan.

The high surf advisory is in effect until 6am Tuesday. For the high rip current risk, it is in effect through Wednesday afternoon.

These conditions will create dangerous conditions for swimmers and beachgoers. Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water. The public is being warned to avoid venturing out near reef lines facing east. Large breaking waves can knock you down and cause serious injuries. Very strong rip currents will be life-threatening. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions.

Residents of Saipan and Tinian are urged to avoid venturing out near reef lines facing east. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don`t swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. (PR)
