A large north northwest swell produced by strong winds associated with a shear line will cause hazardous surf across the Mariana Islands through today, Wednesday, according to the CNMI Homeland Security and Emergency Management.

The agency said that fresh to strong northeast winds along with large north northwest swell associated with a shear line will cause hazardous conditions for the operation of small craft across the local waters this morning.

A high surf advisory remains in effect until 4pm today.

Hazardous surf of 9 to 11 feet along north facing shores and 8 to 10 feet along west facing shores will persist this morning but hazardous surf should gradually subside later in the day.

A small craft advisory remains in effect today.

Northeast winds of 15 to 25 knots and combined seas of 9 to 11 feet will continue this morning. Operating small craft under these conditions is hazardous.

The public, especially those operating smaller vessels, should avoid boating in these conditions. If travel by boat is necessary, exercise caution especially near reef lines and when entering or leaving harbors and inlets. Do not venture near exposed reefs and beaches, especially those along north and west facing reefs as rip currents will be life threatening. (PR)
