The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library saw a nearly 4-percent increase in its total library collection for fiscal year 2011.

From a total collection of 63,072, the library added 2,384 titles in fiscal year 2011, bringing its total collection to 65,456.

Of the added items, 13 percent or 310 titles were purchased through Library Friends. The rest of the items were McNaughton new titles, other books, as well as those purchased through a competitive grant last year.

“We attribute the increase to our proactive efforts to acquire books in direct response to patron requests as an integral component of our overall efforts to meet customer demands and to continually attract patron traffic and expand our patron base,” executive director John Oliver Gonzales told Saipan Tribune.

Gonzales added, “Also, we made it our renewed commitment to allocate and invest as much local NMI government and federal [Institute of Museum and Library Services] grant funds to direct patron services, our most vital mission as a public library.”
