Public invited to DVAM events, proclamation
October is nationally and locally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month; 2017 marks the 23rd year that DVAM has been recognized in the CNMI.
As part of DVAM, the Northern Marianas Coalition Against Domestic & Sexual Violence and the Family Violence Task Force would like to invite the public to take part in the proclamation signing ceremony next week and other DVAM events throughout October.
The proclamation signing will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 3, 2017, at Saipan World Resort’s Royal Taga Hall.
The ceremony will have October 2017 recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month in the CNMI, feature guest speakers, and showcase exhibits from different community programs.
This year’s recipient of the Bridge of Light award will also be presented at the DVAM proclamation signing.
A Day of Unity will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017, from 1pm to 7pm at the Dandan baseball field. This family fun event will feature activity and information booths, musical and dance entertainment, the Men’s Walk Against Domestic Violence around 5pm, and a candlelight vigil for victims of domestic violence at 6pm.
The first 200 Day of Unity participants will also be able to receive a free DVAM T-shirt and other incentives. Raffle prizes will also be given out.
In addition, two Walk & Roll Against Domestic Violence events are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2017, in Susupe (starting at the Mount Carmel Cathedral parking lot) and Wednesday, Oct. 25, 2017, in Chinatown (starting at the Chinatown basketball court).
Registration for participants will be at 5pm with the walk starting at 5:30pm. The first 100 participants will receive a free DVAM 2017 T-shirt. Walk & Roll event participants also are encouraged to bring signs or banners to help spread awareness of domestic violence.
This year’s DVAM theme “Break the Cycle. Heal Generations” was chosen by the DVAM committee and will be discussed along with other topics related to domestic violence on KKMP 92.1 FM on Tuesday mornings starting on Tuesday, Oct. 10, 2017, throughout the month. The DVAM committee will also appear on the Marianas Agupa’ radio show on 101.3 Magic FM on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017.
More information on DVAM events happening on Tinian and Rota will be forthcoming.
