A public hearing has been set for Jan. 25 on a House bill to rename the San Antonio Middle School to “Francisco Mendiola Sablan Middle School.”

The hearing will be held at the Pedro P. Tenorio Multi-Purpose Center in Susupe.

House Bill 19-106, authored by Rep. Joseph Leepan Guerrero, seeks to rename the school to honor its first principal and his years of service in the education field.

Sablan served as principal from 1971 to 1975, and also served as a lawmaker in the Marianas Islands Legislative District.

“The Legislature finds that…Sablan’s esteemed working career has benefitted the entire Commonwealth, most especially the residents and community of San Antonio Village,” the bill states.

Rep. Felicidad Ogumoro, chairperson of the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare, has requested the presence of CNMI Public School System, the San Antonio Middle School and its Parent Teacher Association, the mayor of Saipan, and the San Antonio Church parish.

Written comments are encouraged to be submitted three days prior to the hearing. They can be emailed to rep.ftogumoro@gmail.com
