Precinct 2 representatives Christina Sablan and John Paul Sablan announced yesterday that the next event in their “Beautify Our Villages” initiative is a community planting and cleanup this Saturday, April 27, at William S. Reyes Elementary School in Chalan Kanoa, from 8am to 10:30am. The event is open to the public, and volunteers are welcome.

“In celebration of Environment Month and Earth Day, we will be planting trees and flowers to help beautify our precinct’s public elementary school, which lost a lot of its greenery in Super Typhoon Yutu,” Rep. Tina Sablan said.

“We will also invite volunteers to help clean up the litter on and around the school premises. WSR is right in the heart of Chalan Kanoa, and we’d like to spruce up the area and make it nicer for our kids and their families,” she added.

The representatives are collaborating with WSR Elementary School students, staff, and parents; Division of Forestry; Northern Marianas College Cooperative Research and Extension Educational Services; and Micronesia Islands Nature Alliance.

The event is designed to be both fun and educational, and volunteers will learn gardening techniques at different planting stations around the campus.

Pedro Tudela, the Division of Forestry’s community stewardship program coordinator, said that the division is glad to be part of the event. “I hope to see families coming out to support their kids,” he said, noting that there are “a lot of jobs” involved in planting and taking care of trees and flowers.

“This is our second event in our ‘Beautify Our Villages’ project, and we are grateful for our volunteers, collaborators and most especially the students from WSR that will be coming out to join us to have an amazing experience,” Rep. John Paul Sablan said.

“We still have a lot more exciting projects for the months to come, and it is a great opportunity to practice your skills, and see personalities and people of all ages coming together to create an effect of lasting encouraging change around our community,” he added.
