Delegate Gregorio Kilili C. Sablan (D-MP) disclosed over the weekend that the Public School System is receiving $499,999 to support 60 AmeriCorps members this year.

Sablan said in his e-kilili newsletter that the AmeriCorps announced Tuesday that after completing their service with AmeriCorps, these members are expected to earn $157,576 in Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards to help pay off their student loans and other educational expenses.

As a result of the fiscal year 2023 AmeriCorps State and National Grant Competition, the CNMI will receive a total of $499,000 in funding from AmeriCorps, the federal agency that administers AmeriCorps and other national service programs.

According to the AmeriCorps, through this competition, one successful grantee operating in the CNMI will receive $499,999 in competitive funding from AmeriCorps to support approximately 60 AmeriCorps members.

Since 2006, over 500 AmeriCorps volunteers in high school have served over 18,000 of their fellow students with tutoring or by assisting teachers with educational projects.

The PSS AmeriCorps Program will support 60 AmeriCorps members who will provide cross age peer-to-peer tutoring services in reading to at-risk public school students performing at the bottom quadrant in grades K-8th Grade at nine elementary and seven middle school sites across Saipan, Tinian, and Rota.

AmeriCorps members will be responsible for increasing the reading level and academic achievement of 450 students.
