PSS donates toys to Karidat

The Public School System’s Central Office donated this week about 30 toys bought with money from a silent auction they had among staff recently, according to Elsa Castro who dropped off the toys at the Karidat office this Tuesday.

“During the time of Christmas, where needy families don’t have anything to unwrap, the silent auction was good opportunity to raise funds to buy gifts for those kids…the kids who really need it the most,” Castro told the Saipan Tribune.

According to Castro, the silent auction was the idea of associate commissioner of curriculum and instruction Jackie Quitigua, and soon caught on with other offices in PSS Central.

The silent auction was comprised of unused items PSS employee and staff brought from their households, according Castro. The items included brand-new luggage, towels, handbags, diaries, pencils, headband sets, perfumes, fragrance products and other household items.

“A lot of times we buy things that we don’t use,” she said. They had a week to gather the times, and held the auction last week Friday.

The toys were bought from Lollipops and Joeten, according to Castro. She targeted toys for kids aged 36 months and below up to 16 years old, she said.

The 30 toys purchased were worth $217. 50, she added.

She hopes PSS will start earlier next year, aiming hopefully at November to start raising money.

“I hope we continue. We’re going to aim to start early, and hopefully we raise close to $500, if not a $1,000,” she said.
