PSS decides not to renew Waldo’s contract

The Public School System will soon lose its finance director after it decided not to renew the Richard Waldo’s contract.
Saipan Tribune learned that Waldo received the 90-day notice of his contract’s non-renewal last month indicating that his function will cease after August this year.
Waldo in a short telephone interview with Saipan Tribune yesterday admitted that his contract was only extended for three months by PSS or until August. But he declined to answer further inquiries.
Education Commissioner Dr. Rita A. Sablan, meanwhile, refused to comment on the issue when asked yesterday.
“At this point, since this matter concerns a personnel issue, I have no comments to make,” said the commissioner.
BOE fiscal and personnel affairs committee chair Tanya King confirmed the non-renewal of Waldo’s contract, but she refused to further discuss the matter citing PSS’ personnel policy.
However, King disclosed that an interim appointment will soon be made by the commissioner and that the finance director position will be announced at a later time.
Waldo was hired as PSS’ finance director in June 2011. His contract was for two years term with a salary of $65,000 per annum. The director’s post was the same position he left vacant in December 2007.
PSS has been operating without a finance director since Waldo retired in 2007 during the tenure of former education commissioner Dr. David Borja.
Saipan Tribune learned that Waldo worked for PSS as acting director of finance from 2001 until December 2006. He was then formally appointed as director of finance until he retired in 2007.
Waldo obtained his business management degree from the University of California in Los Angeles and obtained his CPA in the State of New Hampshire. He also has a bachelor’s degree in political science and history and has a master’s degree in business management.
